More Than a Decade with Us: Stora Enso

With our campaign “More Than a Decade with Us”, we want to tell the inspiring stories of the companies that became ENplus® certified more than 10 years ago and have remained loyal to the scheme throughout all this time. Today, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Stora Enso, a leading provider of renewable products with one of its pellet production locations in Imavere, Estonia.

Stora Enso was established in 1998 through the merger of the Finnish company Enso Oyj and the Swedish company Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags Aktiebolag (STORA). But the history of the company dates back more than 700 years.

The first documented mention of the Stora part of the company dates back to 1288, when copper was mined near Falun in Sweden. These operations evolved into Stora Kopparbergs Bergslag in 1862 and included mining, iron and timber activities.

The Enso part of the company dates back to 1872, when the sawmill company W. Gutzeit & Co was founded in Kotka, Finland by the Norwegian Hans Gutzeit. It was one of the first steam-powered sawmills in Finland. In 1912, Gutzeit acquired the Enso träsliperi AB. After a number of mergers and acquisitions over the years, Enso-Gutzeit became Finland’s largest forest company by the late 1990s and adopted the name Enso Oy in 1996.

Today, Stora Enso is a leading provider of renewable products in packaging, biomaterials, and wood construction, as well as one of the largest private forest owners in the world.

Stora Enso’s high-quality wood pellets are made from wood shavings, dry chips and sawdust by-products from their own sawmills, offering a reliable, cost-efficient source of energy for residential, commercial or industrial heating. They’re also a popular choice for comfortable, hygienic and hassle-free horse bedding.

The Imavere mill was established in 1995 and has an annual capacity of 350.000 m3 of sawn timber, 160.000 m3 of processed timber and 100.000 m3 of pellets.

From forest to the front door, the company is responsible for the entire production and supply chain. They integrate the wood pellet production directly after the planning line, reducing unnecessary transport.

Imavere sawmill is located in central Estonia and produces sawn timber, processed timber and pellets. The 6 mm superior quality pellets are made exclusively from by-products and residues from the wood industry.

The company’s products meet the highest quality industry standards set by leading pellet certifications such as ENplus® – it has been supplying the market with ENplus® A1 wood pellets for over 10 years now.
