More Than a Decade With Us: ALFA WOOD GROUP S.A.
This time, our series “More Than a Decade With Us” takes us to Greece, where ALFA WOOD GROUP S.A. stands as one of the country’s most established and forward‑looking players in the wood and bioenergy sector.
A family‑driven beginning with a long-term vision
Founded in 1980, ALFA WOOD GROUP began as a family initiative with a clear ambition: to build a modern, technologically advanced presence in wood processing. What started as a gradual investment in production capacity and know‑how soon developed into a strategically expanding industrial group.
From the outset, the company embraced a philosophy of sustainable growth. Reinvestment in technology, human capital, and modern production systems shaped its identity, while a consistent focus on MDF and particleboard production laid the foundations for a vertically integrated model that ensures full control over raw materials and quality.
A decisive step into bioenergy
A defining milestone came in 2012, when ALFA WOOD GROUP entered the bioenergy sector by establishing a state‑of‑the‑art pellet and briquette facility in Nevrokopi, Drama. This move was not simply a response to market trends – it reflected the company’s long‑standing commitment to circular economy principles.
By transforming wood by‑products into high‑efficiency renewable fuels, the Group reinforced its dedication to responsible resource use and positioned itself as a reliable supplier for demanding European markets.
Today, the Nevrokopi plant produces more than 65 000 tons of ENplus® certified pellets annually, serving as a benchmark for quality and operational discipline.
A vertically integrated and modern industrial group
Over more than four decades, ALFA WOOD GROUP has expanded through consistency rather than rapid growth. The Group now operates four production plants in Greece and maintains multiple distribution centres both domestically and abroad.
Its core strength lies in large‑scale MDF and particleboard production, supported by advanced finishing lines for melamine‑coated panels and laminate flooring. Full vertical integration, strict quality control, and optimised raw material utilisation give the company a competitive edge, while its flexible supply chain allows it to respond effectively to market needs.
Sustainability is embedded in daily operations. All production units generate energy from biomass, utilizing internal wood residues, and photovoltaic installations further reduce the environmental footprint.
Loyal to ENplus®
ALFA WOOD GROUP applied for ENplus® certification shortly after entering the pellet market -an early decision that reflected its internal philosophy of operating under clearly defined standards and measurable performance criteria.
For the company, ENplus® has always been more than a label. It is a comprehensive framework that strengthens traceability, production discipline, and consistency across the entire supply chain. The certification process enhanced internal monitoring, documentation, and alignment with the highest European expectations.
Remaining ENplus® certified for over a decade demonstrates the Group’s long‑term commitment to reliability and credibility. The certification has supported export growth, reinforced trust with partners and distributors, and become an integral part of the company’s identity in the bioenergy sector.
A stable partner for the future
From its origins as a family‑driven initiative to its current role as a major industrial manufacturer, ALFA WOOD GROUP has built its reputation on consistency, innovation, and strategic vision. Today, it stands as a reliable partner in the European wood and bioenergy market – combining production capacity, certified quality, and a long‑term commitment to sustainable development.
