Pellet Consumers Survey 2026

ENplus® conducts a survey every two years to collect feedback from end users. The most recent survey, conducted during December 2025 & January 2026, provides valuable insights into the habits, motivations and expectations of wood pellet consumers. With a large number of respondents from over twenty countries, the findings reveal a mature and stable market that continues to rely heavily on trust and quality assurance.

The majority of pellet consumers who participated in the survey had long-term experience with pellets with over 90% having been using pellets for more than three years and almost all having no intention of switching to another heating solution. This long-term commitment suggests a high level of satisfaction and confidence in wood pellet heating.

The motivations behind choosing wood pellets remain consistent with previous years. Respondents highlighted three main reasons:

  • Efficiency (40%) – Wood pellets are seen as the most effective heating solution for their homes
  • Affordability (39%) – Cost remains a decisive factor
  • Environmental benefits (30%) – A significant proportion value wood pellets as a cleaner, more environmentally friendly option

Price remains the dominant factor when purchasing wood pellets, but quality certification stands out as a major decision driver, surpassing even delivery convenience and supplier proximity. In contrast, the origin of the wood pellets only matters to half of the respondents, and a sustainability certification appears to have minimal influence on purchasing decisions.

Compared to previous years, consumers reported fewer challenges during the 2025 heating season with half of the respondents experiencing no difficulties at all. Among those who did, the main issues were high prices (18%) and lower-than-expected pellet quality (17%). These results suggest a more stable market with improved availability and pricing compared to earlier periods of volatility.

The survey also assessed consumer familiarity with ENplus®, the world-leading wood pellet certification scheme: 83% of respondents were aware of ENplus®, though this figure may be influenced by the survey’s distribution channels and, amongst those aware of the scheme, 87% consider ENplus® important when purchasing pellets.
