ENplus® is expected to certify more than 14.5 million tonnes of wood pellets in 2024
The world-leading certification scheme for wood pellet quality reports increasing demand from outside Europe
ENplus® has certified over 13.6 million tonnes of wood pellets in 2023, while the certified production this year is projected to surpass 14.5 million tonnes*.
Germany remains ahead of other countries with a solid lead of almost 3.7 million tonnes of ENplus® certified pellets produced in 2023. The runner-up spot is for Austria, which increases its annual certified production by 100k to more than 1.6 million tonnes. France comes third, followed closely by Spain in the fourth place. The Top 5 list of countries with largest certified pellet output for 2023 is completed by Belgium with almost 600 000 tonnes of certified pellets.
The certification scheme continues gaining popularity outside Europe. In the past few months, the number of pellet producers with an active certification in Brazil has increased to over 30 which led to the organisation of the scheme’s first training in the country, dedicated to the quality managers of the certified companies. Less than a year after joining the list of countries where the certification scheme is present, China also already has 8 certified pellet producers and 1 certified pellet trader while Japan has now its first 2 certified pellet traders.
As of May 2024, the country with the most ENplus® certified pellet producers is Poland where the market seems to embrace the certification more than ever. Despite the war in Ukraine, the country is another example for increasing number of newly issued certificates.
In the past year, the ENplus® management invested extra efforts and closed more than 150 fraud cases, which led to the achievement of another milestone – more than 1100 fraud cases have been identified and solved in total. Additionally, the blacklist where all fraudulent entities are exposed to the public has also been updated and now includes over 300 companies which should not be trusted.
This year the scheme´s management pays special attention to the companies who were among the first to join the scheme and have remained loyal over a decade. Their inspirational stories, good practices and impact on the local economy are shared through a dedicated series that can be followed via the scheme´s website and digital communications channels.
