More Than A Decade With Us: Sparrow d.o.o.
When Sparrow d.o.o. launched its wood pellet production line in Varvarin, Central Serbia, back in 2014, the company entered a market that was still taking shape. Located 180 km south of Belgrade, Sparrow began its journey with technology transferred from Italy and the technical support of Costruzioni Nazzareno SRL. From the very beginning, the company set ambitious goals: to build a stable production system, to guarantee consistent quality, and to become a trusted supplier for both domestic and international markets.
Just one year after starting production, Sparrow achieved its first major milestone. In March 2015, the company obtained its ENplus® A2 certification, followed by ENplus® A1 certification in August 2018. These achievements were not only a recognition of quality but also a strategic step toward entering the EU market at a time when the local Serbian market was still underdeveloped. Certification became the foundation on which Sparrow built its long-term commercial partnerships.
Investment and Expansion
Over the years, Sparrow has continuously reinvested in its production line, increasing capacity from 30,000 to 80,000 tonnes per year. In the past five years alone, more than EUR 8 million has been invested in equipment upgrades — from chipping and debarking to milling, drying, and process stabilization. Today, the production line integrates German, Italian, and US technologies, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
With the completion of its fourth investment phase, Sparrow proudly stands as the largest pellet producer in Serbia. The company’s 2026 plan targets an annual output of 80,000 tonnes, half of which will be ENplus® A1 quality. The strategic priority remains unchanged: maintaining high production levels and ensuring continuous product availability on the market shelves.
Market Leadership at Home and Abroad
Sparrow is a recognised market leader in Serbia and North Macedonia, supported by a strong presence in the EU. The company exports regularly to Italy, Slovenia, Germany, and Greece, with its branded product visible for years in some of Italy’s largest retail centers.
The past two years have been particularly challenging for the wood pellet industry, marked by fluctuating demand and market instability. Despite this, Sparrow maintained over 85% production capacity — a result achieved through an aggressive and creative sales strategy. Participation in Progetto Fuoco 2024 opened new opportunities in Germany and Greece and further strengthened the company’s long-standing position in Italy.
Exports have grown to over 35% of total sales, while Sparrow has simultaneously invested in local retail centers to stay close to final consumers and monitor market dynamics. Today, their pellets can be found in Serbia, North Macedonia, Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Bulgaria, and Greece.
People, Quality, and Reliability
Sparrow employs 72 people, including a 14‑member commercial team responsible for purchasing and sales. The company attributes its competitive advantage to four pillars: product quality, availability, sales policy, and sales support. Above all, Sparrow believes that success comes from people — their ability to coordinate, adapt, and respond to different business environments.
The decision to pursue ENplus® certification was made at the very beginning of the company’s journey. With the EU representing the most promising market, Sparrow understood that international clients required a reliable quality guarantee.
The company chose BEA Institute from Austria as its certification body, valuing their experience in Serbia and their strong technical support. Over the years, BEA has become one of Sparrow’s key partners, providing guidance and know‑how that helped the company maintain its certification and continuously improve its processes.
